Due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country welcomed only more than 2 million foreign tourists in 2020. However, in the 2015-2019 period, the number of foreign tourist arrivals to the country rose by 2.3 times, from 7.9 million to around 18.5 million, or an average annual growth rate of 22 percent. Vietnam ranked 63rd among 140 countries and territories in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2019, jumping up 12 places from 2015.
