Single parents have always shouldered extra responsibilities, but the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated challenges for this growing segment of the Alberta population.
According to census data from Statistics Canada, Alberta is home to more than 186,000 lone-parent families.
Though some share custody or have the help of a live-in partner, others have navigated the pandemic almost entirely on their own, balancing work, school and child care.

Alberta Health Services has begun the rollout of an additional 25,350 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to all health-care zones, while the Alberta government loosens the rules just a bit to allow people who live alone to visit another home one time over the holidays.

A Saturday event in St. Albert for single moms and their kids gave the children an oppportunity to shop for a holiday gift for their moms.(Kaleo Collective)
EDMONTON A group that works with single mothers in the Edmonton-area started a new holiday tradition on Saturday. The Little Santa’s event gave children a chance to spoil mom by picking out a gift from the treasure chest and to take home a ginger bread house and a free meal. The Kaleo Collective organized it as a drive-through to ensure safety. “It’s a way to start a new tradition at Christmas, it’s a way for single moms to get a really great time as a family, they get to build that gingerbread, the stress of the meal is completely off the table for tonight, and it really is an opportunity for children to experience the joy of giving back,” said Layna Haley of Kaleo Collective.
