Hope after wildfire: Tiny sequoias could grow into giants

In an area devastated by wildfires, an unusual project is planting offspring from some of the largest and oldest trees on the planet, sequoias, to see if genes that allowed the parent to survive so long will protect new growth from the perils of climate change.

Letters to the editor for Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021

Letters to the editor for Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021 Ocala Star-Banner What Would Martin Say? As many Americans pause to remember and celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., imagine his response to the events of the last 12 months, including the Jan. 6 insurrection. Dr. King was a man who believed in the tenants of democracy, justice, law and order and equality for all. He would be outraged and disappointed that some government officials, who took an oath to uphold equal justice for all, had chosen to use their power for their own political and personal advantage rather than serving their constituents and country. They did not put America first but rather themselves. The deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and others with the ensuing protests would have reminded him that “the chains of discrimination” have yet to be broken.
