BALTIMORE (AP) â A Baltimore judge has blocked Gov. Larry Hoganâs plan to end pandemic-related federal enhanced unemployment benefits early in Maryland.
Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Fletcher-Hill issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning ordering the Hogan administration to keep paying the expanded benefits at least until two lawsuits brought by out-of-work Marylanders are resolved. The governorâs office said the state doesnât plan to appeal, according to news outlets.
Fletcher-Hill found that plaintiffs showed that they would suffer âirreparable harmâ if the preliminary injunction wasnât issued and noted that the plaintiffâs stories are reminders that while the impact of the pandemic has been universal, it has also been âcruelly unevenâ.

In a four-page ruling, Baltimore City Judge Lawrence Fletcher Hill granted a preliminary injunction blocking Gov. Larry Hogan from eliminating pandemic unemployment benefits before they expire in September.
A spokesman for Hogan said there will be no appeal of this decision, noting the lawsuit would outlast the extended benefits, but adds continuing the extra benefits discourages workers from applying for jobs and jeopardizes the state s economic recovery.
The decision on enhanced unemployment benefits has received reactions from various people, one being Sen. Jim Rosapepe who has consistently criticized Hogan s decision to end the enhanced benefits early.
