A movement pushing for Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law to eliminate from its name any reference to John Marshall, chief justice of the United States between 1801 and 1834 and a slave owner, continues to pick up steam and not just in Northeast Ohio.
The school's name references former Chief Justice John Marshall, who is known for helping slaves win their freedoms but who also nonetheless owned slaves for most of his life. The council resolution follows an initiative that began in 2020 intended to spur the school to consider eliminating references to Marshall.
