questions. dana loesch is an author, nationally syndicated radio host. she has thought a lot about red flag laws. she joins us tonight. dana, thanks for coming on. of course, tucker, thanks for having me. tucker: this is one of those ideas it s new. if you hear part of it, it kind of makes sense. you can sort of tell who the crazy people are. we think we can anyway. and some of them have guns. and that s obviously bad. and so why don t we just take the guns away. if you summarize it that way, a lot of people support red flag laws, including a lot of republicans. you say it s worth thinking through the consequences. what are those consequences? well, tucker, those consequences are great indeed. it s not just san francisco. there are even elected members of our house of representatives that have referred to law abiding gun owners as and i quote domestic terrorists and these are the individuals that would be implementing this red flag system. first off, the red flag proposals and i
rise before a ban would get put in place. the problem is there weren t 20 million assault weapons when the first ban was put in place. they were substantially less. but also what happened in that time is social media, facebook, we have an epidemic of young people killing themselves and killing others and we don t know exactly why they are doing that. that s as much of an epidemic as anything else. martha: absolutely. for weeks, we have this enraged discussion of rather we should ban a certain type of garden, we are feeding the same fire for that to begin with. we are feeding into that. martha: so many of them it would nearly be impossible to get any handle but here s the problem i think both sides of this debate need to talk to each other about. let s put this up on the screen. it s the amount of people we aren t talking about law-abiding gun owners. we are talking about crazy people who get their hands on
the conversations about possible new legislation just strikes me as really political and unproductive. if we can t agree to have conversations, then i m not sure i m not sure what we re all doing here. it would be really silly, and i think it looks timid and afraid to say, we re not going to come to the table. we should all have a vested interest in solving this problem, and i m not suggesting republicans and nra members aren t interested in solving the problem. but the group, the organization doesn t represent where i am as a mom, as a law abiding gun owner. as a gun owner it s in my interest to make sure that guns don t get into the hands of bad people, and it s just frankly become too easy for bad, sick people to get guns. i m not the 3r0b, right? nra members who are law abiding gun owners nor the problem. it s too easy, and it s time for
senator manchin, i hope at some point in the future i hope somebody is wrong. i don t want the atlantic to be wrong. but hopefully the president understands that this matters to america and it s going to matter to him in the election. this could hurt him if people follow through on their intentions. chris, if he s talking about universal background checks saying that it prevents families and all different transactions from law-abiding gun owners. i m okay. if we can t get the building block of where we can stop a commercial transaction where you and i don t know that person nobody is talking about family transfers. they re talking about gun safety, know how to store your weapons and have a penalty if you let people get access when they shouldn t have it. we all know what we re talking about. the only mystery is why something doesn t happen. i appreciate you coming on the show. it s going to matter in your race. i m not going to change.
follow through on their intentions. well, chris, if it he s talking about universal background checks saying that prevents families and all different transactions from law-abiding gun owners. i understand. i m okay. i don t think we need to go there right now. i think if we can t even get the building block of where we can stop a commercial transaction. right. where you and i don t know that person nobody s talking about family transfers. they re talking about gun safety. know how to store your weapons. have a penalty if you let people get access when they shouldn t have it. the commercial transactions. we all know what we re talking about. there is no mystery to this issue anymore. the only mystery is why something doesn t happen. senator manchin, i appreciate your doggedness on it. it s going to matter in your race. it s going to matter in others. i m not going to change. i am who i am, chris. common sense to me is common sense in west virginia. gun sense is gun sense in
