Yankees History: Bill Dickey's strange final season

Yankees History: Bill Dickey’s strange final season Bill Dickey had a Hall of Fame playing career, but his brief managerial career came about strangely. Share this story Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images If you’re ranking the most underrated Yankees of all time, there’s a decent argument that Bill Dickey comes in at number one. Between the contemporaries he played with (Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at the beginning of his career, Joe DiMaggio at the end) and the fact that a more legendary catcher (Yogi Berra, who even ended up wearing the same number) came along not long after Dickey, he’s often overshadowed in Yankees’ history.

Welcome to This Day in Yankees History. The New Year is upon us, and the winter hot stove continues to percolate. These daily posts will highlight two or three key moments in Yankees history on a given date, as well as recognize players born on the day. Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane with us! ★ ★ ★ 86 Years Ago A group headed by NFL Brooklyn Dodgers owner Dan Topping, league exec Larry MacPhail, and real estate magnate Del Webb purchase the Yankees from former owner Jacob Ruppert’s estate, for the relatively paltry sum of $2.8 million. MacPhail would be forced out of the group after the 1947 World Series, when MacPhail reportedly turned off his fellow co-owners with unruly behavior. Webb and Topping would go on to own the team through 1964, overseeing the most successful era of baseball in Yankee history. The team won 15 pennants and 10 World Series. The pair then sold the team to CBS in 1964, and in 1973, George Steinbrenner would finally purchase the team.

MLB Finally Recognizes Negro League Players as Major Leaguers

MLB Finally Recognizes Negro League Players as Major Leaguers MLB Finally Recognizes Negro League Players as Major Leaguers Comments Off on MLB Finally Recognizes Negro League Players as Major Leaguers It has taken 100 years, but Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on Dec. 16 that the Negro Leagues will be included in the organization’s history rather than being treated as a separate entity. “It is MLB’s view that the Committee’s 1969 omission of the Negro Leagues from consideration was clearly an error that demands today’s designation,” MLB said in a statement. The Negro National League was formed on Feb. 13, 1920, at a YMCA in Kansas City, Missouri. The National Negro League struggled to make ends meet, and the Indianapolis Clowns were the last NNL team to suit up for games as a traveling squad until halting operations in 1989.
