LETTER | Don't keep bus operators clinging to false hope

LETTER | Don t keep bus operators clinging to false hope A - LETTER | Last Thursday, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong had a meeting with the Pan Malaysia Bus perators Association in Putrajaya and later posted on his Facebook that among the proposals being worked on is amending the rules for executive-class express bus service. The next day, he launched the 2021 annual general meeting of the Association of Tour Bus Operators of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and announced that the age limit for excursion bus could be extended from 11 to 15 years if stipulated conditions are met. Although these headways are welcomed by bus operators, they are only the tip of an iceberg. Nevertheless, these are steps in the right direction and many issues are still pending.

Study to boost the value of future rail network

MALAYSIA will embark on a detailed study this year to see how it can maximise economic and social returns should a decision be made to proceed with the building of a high speed rail (HSR) network in the country. According to MyHSR Corporation Sdn Bhd (MyHSR), the special purpose company to spearhead the project on the Malaysian side, the study is expected to take up to six months. If Malaysia decides to proceed with building a HSR network, it is possible to have as many as four new domestic HSR services, said MyHSR Corp chief executive Datuk Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal at a recent press briefing, following the lapse of a bilateral agreement signed with Singapore on Dec 13,2016 to have a cross border HSR service from Bandar Malaysia to Jurong East, Singapore.

Following this, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the government will undertake a detailed study to explore all possible options, including the viability of a domestic HSR project and its benefits to Malaysians. When asked by a reporter last month, I gave several pertinent reasons that it is better not to proceed with the HSR project if the train service terminates in Johor Baru.
