PASADENA (CNS) - Pasadena will reopen four of its library branches for in-person service next week and expand hours at two others.
On Tuesday, the Linda Vista library at 1281 Bryant St. and the San Rafael branch at 1240 Nithsdale Road will reopen. The next day, the Lamanda Park library at 140 S. Altadena Drive and the Santa Catalina branch at 999 E. Washington Blvd. will open their doors.
The libraries will all operate at reduced capacity, but visitors will be able to browse the book collections, check-out materials, use public computers and access printing and copying services. Visitors will be required to wear face coverings and maintain physical distance from others.
URM buildings have been widely recognized as a hazard to life safety due to their potential to collapse during an earthquake, Derderian said.
Although Pasadena passed an ordinance in 1993 mandating that all URM buildings be retrofitted, vacated or demolished, no record has been found as to why the Central Library was not identified and addressed as a URM building, Derderian said. Additionally, the results of the review provided to the city indicate that Central Library does not meet current seismic standards recommended by the American Society of Civil Engineers, she added. Therefore, given our present state of knowledge, the building is unsafe to occupy.

GRIEVING Bella Morake (41) says the Tshwane Metro Police Department has taken something very special from her.
Her husband, Doctor Setlai (51), from Amanda Park in Leeufontein in Tshwane was killed allegedly by Metro police on Tuesday night in Bavianspoort, Tshwane.
Bella told
Daily Sun her husband was attending a community meeting in Amanda Park.
“At night I heard gunshots and my husband was not picking up his phone,” she said.
She said when she went to the place where her husband told her he would be, she found him covered with a plastic. Bella recognised him by his shoes.
