Dam rehabilitation improves biodiversity in Cuba
Ciego de Avila, Cuba, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) The rehabilitation of the Estero-Socorro dam, in Ciego de Avila province, has had a great social and environmental impact, as the project was included in the Life Task to fight climate change. The construction of 14 ecological passings enable the exchange of water between the Jagüey Bay, in Bolivia municipality, with the adjacent La Redonda lagoon, in Moron, an action that helped reduce the reservoir s saltiness levels.
Estero-Socorro Coordinator Ana Manzano highlighted the natural regeneration of 600 hectares of mangroves and the reestablishment of the marine fauna, providing the return of different species such as snook, bonefish, tarpon, pompo, among others.
