Female cocoa farmers in Ghana benefit from Divine Chocolate’s literacy programme By Anthony Myers Divine Chocolate’s adult literacy and numeracy programme, which helps cocoa-growing communities in West Africa, has revealed it has so far helped 235 farmers to read and write - 171 of which are women.
The ethical brand, co-owned by Fairtrade, began the programme in 2014 at Ghana s Kuapa Kokoo cooperative (which owns 20% of Divine Chocolate).
Fairtrade said the aim of the project is to increase basic literacy and numeracy skills, particularly among women, to support empowerment and engagement.
The programme has been a huge success and feedback from participants has been positive, with many keen to continue their learning journey, a spokesperson told ConfectioneryNews.

What do you want most from your Easter eggs? A quick hit of sugar and fat to get you through until lunchtime, maybe. A taste of your childhood, transporting you with a single mouthful back to happier, more innocent times. Lord knows, right now we all deserve these little pleasures.
Perhaps a chunk of that delicious, creamy, silky Galaxy egg. Wait! Did you know that Ethical Consumer, which has been rating foods for 30 years, gives Galaxy just 1.5 out of 20 when considering its impact on the environment, people and animals? Awful, isn’t it? Reach instead for another egg.
