The popular hike consists of 1,048 wooden steps, many of which are eroded and degraded. The Kokonut Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the World War II Tramway. In 2019, the city and mayor allocated $1 million towards long-term and immediate repairs to the tramway turned recreational resource. About $74,000 was used in conjunction with the public-private partnership between the city and the Koalition.
