Following Russia s recent ‘Umka 2021 military drills, which took place in March within the Arctic circle, a review is now under way to better place the SSBNs to counteract threats and deployments of NATO forces that operate in the North, Russian newspaper Ivestia reported on 11 May.

As the source said, the contract on the subs’ construction was signed in 2020. The submarines are scheduled to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2026 and 2027. Each submarine will carry 16 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
The Project 941 Akula-class nuclear-powered submarine Dmitry Donskoi that has for long been called the world’s largest submarine is still operational in the Russian Navy. This sub was used to test-fire Bulava ICBMs.
The Russian Navy currently operates four Project 955/Project 955A strategic missile-carrying submarines. The Project 955A submarine Knyaz Oleg is due to be delivered to the Navy this year. Three more submarines of this Project are being built at the Sevmash Shipyard (part of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation).

MOSCOW, December 30. /TASS/. Two Borei-A-class strategic nuclear submarines for the Russian Navy will be laid down next year, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper. The construction of four underwater cruisers of this class is under way, two more will be laid down as part of a new state contract signed this year, he said.
In line with Russia’s current state defense procurement program, a total of 14 Borei-A and Yasen-M nuclear submarines are to be built by 2027, Krivoruchko added.

MOSCOW, December 21. /TASS/. The Russian Navy will receive four submarines in 2021, including two advanced Borei-A nuclear-powered subs armed with ballistic missiles, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the ministry’s enlarged board meeting on Monday.
