The 2021 South Summit will be the third iteration, following 2018’s focus on envisioning what it means for Southern filmmaking to thrive, and 2019’s focus on contextualizing and curating film at the intersection of social justice and Southern identity for the cinema, gallery, and museum space.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina ETV (SCETV) today announced its participation in the Hindsight Project, an initiative focused on supporting Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) filmmakers living in the American South and U.S. Territories. With six selections announced last week, participating filmmakers will create short films for a new digital series exploring the lived experiences of communities of color in the South and in Puerto Rico that reflect the migrations and movements throughout the complicated history of these regions.
In addition to SCETV and other PBS-member stations involved in co-producing
Reel South – the cooperative documentary series now approaching its sixth season – Firelight Media and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) are also collaborating partners in this project.

Distributed through NPR, the “Kanaval” audio docu-series ties the nation of Haiti and city of New Orleans through an historical perspective, focusing on the music that connects them. It is produced by Alex Lewis, an award-winning independent radio producer and musician whose projects include “Going Black: The Legacy of Philly Soul Radio,” and WXPN’s “Gospel Roots of Rock and Soul,” among many other projects.
