The 4th of July was a great day for a picnic and an even better day for kids on San Juan Island. The annual Pig War Picnic presented by the Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor was again a great success. The proceeds from this event go back to the children of Friday Harbor. We were very pleased to give $20,000 this year to 20 graduating seniors who will use the scholarships to attend colleges or trade schools all around the country.
Fourth of July is packed with a day full of events kicking off with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and the annual Family Fun Run at 9 a.m., and ending with fireworks over Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor. Both events start at 10:30 p.m.
The Town of Friday Harbor Planning Commission is drafting an ordinance that would allow food trucks. Whether that means as a food court or along designated streets is being debated. Parking, hours of operation and other regulations are also under discussion. March 23, Town Hall was packed with citizens ready to voice their opinions regarding the subject.
