the water safety sectors collective approach to ensure
everyone connects to and enjoys the water safely.
This
is a significant event – As the lead agency Water Safety
New Zealand (WSNZ) has been working with the wider sector to
develop a collaborative approach to reduce drowning
fatalities and injuries in Aotearoa/New Zealand over the
next five years.
“Achieving this vision will address
the drowning problem in our country,” says WSNZ Board
Chair Maurice Kidd. “As New Zealanders and visitors, we
enjoy some of the most magnificent waterways in the world.

Thousands of Tauranga seniors are falling every year, promoting payments of more than $57 million to the city in claims to help them recover. And the impacts can be catastrophic with lasting effects on overall wellbeing, a local physio says.
Across the Bay of Plenty, 79,671 falls-related claims were made to ACC by people 65 years and over in the last five years.
This totalled $102,816,078 of active payments, which could be for claims lodged in any year as some have ongoing costs.

There s an app for just about every purpose these days, and 76-year-old Whangārei grandmother Dorothy Hutchinson-Fitzpatrick, who has struggled with balance all her life, is delighted with one being trialled by ACC.
The Nymbl balance training app had made a huge difference , she said.
Jamaican born but living in New Zealand for more than 45 years, she had been using Nymbl every day since early December to counter her vertigo and motion sickness.

An injury prevention advocate is calling for trampoline owners to keep an eagle eye on user safety after a bounce in injuries last year. In the Bay of Plenty region last year, there were 848 trampoline-related injuries made to the Accident Compensation Corporation for a cost of more than $536,000.
The injuries contributed to the nationwide total of 12,669 in 2020 which came at a cost of $10.6 million, the highest in the past decade.
