families. that s a big deal. it could be days before we see resource come for the many families that need help. it s more time for insurance to kick in, which we ll also be advocating for. we are standing with the leadership of fema, they re already on the ground. we re grateful for them. we had our leadership teams of about 80 people today preparing the strategy we have to put in place to get or people well again. it only too six hours for president biden to approve or emergency request, just six hours. i signed the order at governor about ten minutes after midnight. by 6:20 in the morning, he was already calling and saying yesterday. we re grateful for that kind of just really thoughtful response for our state. earlier today, governor, the authorities reported 36 people in hawaii have been killed in this disaster. is that the most recent number

the aggravating markets are just so overwhelming, the prosecution has a good chance of meeting its burden of beyond a reasonable doubt, just as it did in the guilt phase. and in either case, the appeals process kicks in? not only does the appeals process kick in, but it is even much more complicated in a death penalty case. you can expect death penalty appeals to last for decades. i mean, the statistics are that of all the people on federal death row, a tiny fraction of them are ever actually executed. i m talking a handful in the last several decades, so you re just not going to see statistically a lot of people put to death. that s because the appeals process is so robust. you have direct appeals and collateral attack and hab yous petitions. the likelihood of success on appeal is tiny but in the united states, the defendant is entitled to all of those appeals

chest. let them huff and puff. he s going to do what he needs to do to get the votes he needs to get from his right, which he did. and the president in the end will get that win. second, people are seeing washington work, and you were talking about the disconnect between what president biden is accomplishing, where the economy is, and where people s sentiment is, their view of the country is still very, very bleak. but people want washington to work. we didn t go right up to the cliff. monday, right, is the date that default was supposed to kick in, the latest date from treasury secretary janet yellen. so for once, congress getting something done a few hours before we had to. the third one, joe, that speaks to your point about how much he s done, when you step back and look at the totality of what s been accomplishments in these two years, the chips act, the infrastructure act, a lot of

what their leaders gave up to get it. meanwhile my next guest says any deal would ignore a costly, growing problem. joining us now to discuss, republican senator bill cassidy of louisiana. senator, thanks for joining us. a potential default now could be just 11 days away theoretically. president biden said today he has done his part and now it is time for republicans to move. how worried are you that a catastrophic default could actually happen? do you think republicans who are negotiating need to be willing to move more? a couple things. first i think the president needs to show leadership. he took about a hundred days to gauge, to kick in, and now that he is finally negotiating i m pleased he is doing so. but i also want to point out that secretary yellen s comment about when default occurs potentially as early as the 1st of june but could be later, well, let s have a little leadership. the financial markets are all nervous about this.
