Every instrument on the track, including Costanza’s voice, are as passionate and powerful as they possibly could be. The track represents an impressive return to form for Against the Current, and the band sound at their best when they fully embrace the rock elements of their sound.

Head Over Heels, showcasing the time for development and revival that Zauner has taken before the release of
Be Sweet.
When speaking about her new album, Zauner shared how “For me, a third record should feel bombastic and so I wanted to pull out all the stops for this one,” which she has demonstrated in her simplified lyrics and care-free feeling.
Alongside her new album, Zauner is set to release a book, ‘Crying in H Mart’, which is a memoir for her mother that celebrates her mixed-race identity and Korean culture.
Despite being written long before the days of COVID lockdown, the themes of isolation, loneliness and escapist dreams will be relatable to so many people right now. However, these dark lyrical themes contrast entirely to the sound of the track. It is a lively and experimental pop song, much like the rest of Kero Kero Bonito’s discography. The influences of the hyperpop genre can be heard in the sound effects throughout, such as the ribbiting frogs and robotic glitches woven into the instrumental.
The track therefore couldn’t have been released at a more perfect time. “It’s a song for anyone who has ever felt trapped, lost and alone,” whilst also being a catchy, upbeat and uplifting listen.

Bubblegum Brain probably has some of my favourite lyrics I’ve ever written,” says Ellise. “Sometimes I can go through something and the only thing I want to do is make a song about it. But other times, when things really mess me up, I need a while to process it. Once I feel like I’m out of the moment and I can see it for what it really was, I can write about it in a song and make it make sense to myself.
Bubblegum Brain is closure in that regard.”
Bubblegum Brain, very fittingly, has a bubblegum pop sound, and the darker side of pop perfectly suits Ellise’s voice. After discovering Ellise’s music from features on Savage Ga$p’s and guccihighwaters’ albums, with this track being my first experience of her solo work, I am far from disappointed. The track, at only 2 minutes and 22 seconds, is an addictive listen which is near impossible not to put on repeat.
