Gaza City | Israel slammed the Gaza Strip with airstrikes on Saturday (Sunday AEST), in a dramatic escalation that included bombing the home of a senior Hamas leader, killing a family of 10 in a refugee camp â most of them children â and pulverising a high-rise that housed media outlets.
The Hamas militant group continued a stream of rocket volleys into Israel, including a late-night barrage on Tel Aviv. One man was killed when a rocket hit his home in a suburb of the seaside metropolis.
With a US envoy on the ground, calls increased for a ceasefire after five days of mayhem that have left at least 145 Palestinians dead in Gaza â including 41 children and 23 women â and eight dead on the Israeli side, all but one of them civilians, including a 5-year-old child.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City flattened three buildings and killed at least 33 people Sunday, medics said, making it the deadliest single attack since heavy fighting broke out between Israel and the territory’s militant Hamas rulers nearly a week ago.
A rescuer could be seen shouting into a hole in the rubble. “Can you hear me?” he called out. “Are you OK?” Minutes later, first responders managed to pull a survivor out and carried him off on an orange stretcher. The Gaza Health Ministry said 12 women and eight children were among those killed, with another 50 people wounded in the attack, and says rescue efforts are still underway.
