The Marion County Sheriff's Department is warning the public about a scam circulating involving one of their officers. Media reports say the sheriff's department's number and an officer's name is being used in the scam. The sheriff's department says their phone number has been showing up on a person's caller ID and the name of a real officer is being used to tell the person called that they have an outstanding federal warrant, and the person is asked to purchase gift cards to avoid being arrested. Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says the calls are a scam, and to make family and friends aware that the Marion County Sheriff's office is NOT calling anyone to discuss warrants. Police will not ask for credit card info or checking account information or ask anyone to get a gift card to take care of a warrant.
