Last October, a group of New York City parents gathered outside City Hall to defend accelerated academic programs. The city’s Department of Education had been chipping away at those programs for over two years part of its equity -oriented agenda and the predominantly Asian crowd was fed up. Keep SHSAT, many signs read, a reference to the Specialized High School Admissions Test that by law determines admission to the city’s top public schools.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) Tuesday, the Pittsford Central School District pulled a worksheet the district says was used in one 4th grade class on one day in January.
The district shared a photo of the worksheet. It talks about the slaves trip to America and that they agreed to work for colonialists.
Pittsford Superintendent Michael Pero says a parent alerted his office to this lesson plan Tuesday. The worksheet was in no way an accurate depiction of slavery during Colonial Times and was highly insensitive in tone, Pero said in a statement. We immediately met with the staff members involved in this lesson and have taken steps to remedy the situation.
Upstate NY school apologizes for falsely teaching slaves came to US by choice

An elementary school in Upstate New York is apologizing after a lesson falsely taught students that slaves came to the U.S. by choice.
WROC reports Pittsford Central School District Superintendent of Schools Michael Pero issued a statement Tuesday after a a parent complained when a fourth grade class at Jefferson Road Elementary School in Pittsford, N.Y., used a worksheet on slavery during Colonial times.
The paper asks four questions, including “Why did slaves come to America?” with a fill-in-the-blank answer: “As an exchange for the trip to America, African Americans agreed to work for colonists for years, but then were kept as slaves.” It also asks what kind of jobs slaves worked, and suggested churning butter was one of them.
