Former US President Donald Trump is now on trial for “Incitement of Insurrection” following the Capitol riots in January. On January 13, the House of Representatives voted by 232 to 197 to impeach him after his far-right supporters attempted to overthrow the democratic result of the November 2020 election, and the President is accused of inciting the mob to attack the heart of American democracy.

Mr Trump said: We have just been through an intense election and emotions are high, but now tempers must be cooled and calm restored. We must get on with the business of America. My campaign vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the election results. My only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote. In so doing I was fighting to defend American democracy. I continue to strongly believe we must reform our election laws to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters, and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections, he added.

The mob who ravaged the Capitol had travelled from across the country to gather for a rally held by the president that morning during which he repeated his baseless claim that the election had been stolen .
Mr Trump then directed his supporters to march on the Capitol building where the electoral college votes for Joe Biden were being certified. As Mr Biden would later declare: At their best, the words of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite.
