The first Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Syracuse last week, signaling the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Feelings of joy, relief and hope are tempered by profound grief at the toll the coronavirus is exacting on residents of Central New York.
The moment demands recognition, even if we don’t feel much like celebrating.
Think about it: In fewer than 10 months, scientists developed a vaccine against a new and deadly viral disease that upended the world and our daily lives. Many of our neighbors participated in clinical trials establishing its effectiveness. Our regional’s teaching hospital, Upstate Medical University, is at the center of the fight, and its leading infectious disease expert is a principal investigator on the vaccine. Hospital workers get CNY’s first Covid-19 vaccinations: A housekeeper at Upstate University Hospital on Tuesday became the first person in Central New York to receive an injection of the new Covid-19 vaccine, raising hopes that the end of the deadly pandemic is in sight. Starting today, Upstate plans to vaccinate as many as 600 workers a day. (Video: Watch the vaccinations).

Suzanne Buck, a registered nurse at Upstate University Hospital, was the third person in Syracuse to receive the Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday.
Buck was vaccinated at Upstate, the first hospital in the region to get shipments of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNtech. Upstate is one of 150 sites worldwide that participated in the clinical trials for the vaccine.

Kenzo B. Mukendi, 48, of Syracuse, was vaccinated at Upstate, the first hospital in the region to get shipments of the vaccine. Developed by Pfizer and BioNtech, the vaccine was the first to receive emergency approval by the Food and Drug Administration. Upstate is one of 150 sites worldwide that participated in the clinical trials for the vaccine.
