WHY and How Lady Justice Martha Koome beat Fred Ngatia SC to be nominated Chief Justice of Kenya
Lady Justice Martha Koome Karambu has been tipped to be the next Chief Justice of Kenya, highly placed sources based at State House have revealed.
Koome, who has more than thirty years of experience in legal practice, and was born Kithiu Village in Miragamieru in Meru County, edged out Senior Consel Fred Ngatia who was a favourite candidate of the system.
Kenya News Day reliably learnt that Justice Koome, who is an Appeals Court Judge and an acclaimed expert in family law, emerged as favourite to replace retired Chief Justice David Maraga after winning endorsement of powerful stake holders with close links to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has constituted a five-member selection panel to begin assessing 13 applicants seeking to fill the position of Chief Justice.
The commission embarked on the process as people wondered why top lawyers, legal scholars and senior judges failed to apply for the top judicial job.
It was widely thought that the current Supreme Court judges would top the list of those seeking the CJ’s position, but none of the five judges applied including DCJ Philomena Mwilu who has been acting as the CJ since Justice David Maraga’s retirement in January.

Havi Dealt Blow After Ruling on Chaotic LSK Meeting

Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has been dealt a blow after the High Court overturned the society s resolutions arrived at during a chaotic meeting in January.
LSK had, on January 18, resolved to suspend all its members during the meeting that saw some of the learned friends in near fistfights.
The High Court in its ruling, on Wednesday, February 3, overturned the resolution.
The court also reinstated the Law Society of Kenya Council members who had been suspended by the society in the meeting that Havi chaired.

Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu [Jonah Onyango, Standard]
Legal experts have warned of a crisis in the Judiciary following the decision by a Meru court to suspend Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.
High Court Judge Patrick Otieno’s shock ruling on Friday following a petition by a Meru resident, however, won praise from other quarters. They argue that the judge was right to order Justice Mwilu to step aside until she clears her name over allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.
Justice Otieno ordered Mwilu to step aside from occupying the DCJ office, sitting as a Supreme Court judge, sitting as a member of the Judicial Service Commission and holding the position of Judiciary Ombudsperson pending determination of the suit filed by Isaiah Mwongela.
