Kentucky's Budget Shrank. These Informal Foster Parents Were Left With Nothing

Natasha King thought it would be temporary, just a few months.  When the state called in 2013 and asked if she could parent her two grandchildren, she didn’t hesitate to take in the kids she loved more than anything in the world. Their mother’s drug problems had gone from bad to worse, and their father had addiction issues of his own.  King, a 46-year-old nursing assistant in Lexington, Kentucky, is still the primary caretaker of her grandchildren, now 12 and 13 years old. Although she had been working two jobs to support her family, she had to quit one during the pandemic to guide the kids through online learning.

Opinion: Flagrant nonsupport charge tears apart families

Opinion: Flagrant nonsupport charge tears apart families Leah Samuel, Opinion contributor © By Pat McDonogh, The CJ Brittany Haney, an inmate at the Kentucky Correctional Insitute for Woman, in Pewee Valley, kissed her month old daughter Brooklynn. Brooklynn is a resident at the Angel House while Haney serves her time for a drug conviction. Brooklynn was brought to the prison for a visit with her mother by caregivers at the Angel House. Dec. 23, 2014. Kentuckians pride themselves on traditional family values – on tight-knit communities held together by bonds of faith and mutual support. You would be hard-pressed to find someone in Kentucky state leadership who doesn’t support mothers caring for their children – and yet the state continues to tear apart more and more mothers and children through a brutal and ineffective criminal justice system.
