Despite persistent and clear expressions of loyalty and patriotism and despite the real and human sacrifice of life in the civil war, after the civil war catholics remained a people viewed by most americans with suspicion and fear. A people apart, a people to be feared. A variety of reasons for this. They were members of what was perceived to be a Foreign Church based in rome. They were, as weve seen, participants in a separate School System.
