CHELMSFORD A police officer made a splash on Sunday, coming to the aid of two distressed young swimmers, with the help of a bystander at Freeman Lake.
Chelmsford police posted on Twitter, “At approximately 4:30 p.m., [May 23,] Officer Derek Hill was conducting a foot patrol of Varney Park and the town beach located on Freeman Lake.

In a press release, Police Chief James Spinney said, Hill saw someone yelling that someone was drowning and pointing towards the water.
Hill made his way to the shore and saw multiple people flailing in the water approximately 30 to 35 feet from shore.
