MPG Meet the Producer: Fiona Cruickshank - Audio Media International

MPG Meet the Producer: Fiona Cruickshank 19th May 2021 Audio Media International spoke with the Music Producers Guild (MPG) to highlight the great work that producers are doing and how they’ve coped with the challenges of the last year. Here we catch up with Fiona Cruickshank, freelance engineer and producer. Based in London, Cruickshank worked in-house at AIR Studios for 11 years before joining AIR Management in 2018 and is now freelance, working across a range of major studios. As well as engineering and mixing, Cruickshank also works in classical and score editing, having worked on many high-profile projects including everything from The Grand Budapest Hotel to the Bowie biopic Stardust. Audio Media International sat down for a chat with Cruickshank (over Zoom, obviously), to find out more…

Facing the void: 'Supernova' is a quiet burning star of a love story

Colin Firth, left, and Stanley Tucci in “Supernova.” (Courtesy of Bleecker Street) The actors Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth have been friends for 20 years, and that is plainly evident watching them play longtime lovers in the wrenchingly beautiful film “Supernova.” The award-winning duo are like a well-worn sweater on screen, comfortable and lived-in, showing the kind of tart affection people show when ardor’s lust has given way to the slow burn of adoration. In a scene early on in “Supernova,” Tucci’s character asks Firth’s character how things are going. “It’s fine for me,” comes the steady reply. Tucci knows better: “Liar,” he says, simply.

Supernova: Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci combine for haunting, heartbreaking drama

It’s not purely about wallowing in nostalgia either, as becomes clear when Sam makes a quick pit-stop and, upon his return, finds Tusker has vanished – without his phone. After a few moments of panic and a quick scout around the area, he’s relieved to find his partner safe and well – if a little disorientated. Turns out he didn’t bring his pills – deliberately. “They remind me I’m ill – and I don’t want that,” Tusker says defiantly. It’s now two years since the novelist got the devastating diagnosis of dementia. Since then, he’s been determined to live life to the full and press on with his work. But now, sensing things are getting worse, Sam wants to try and spend as much time with him, but he’s finding it is taking a heavy toll on his own emotions and mental state.
