An inter-ministerial committee and the Kampot provincial technical administrative committee have agreed to implement a one-month plan from March 1-31 to assess and update the number of trees remaining in mangrove forests in the province.

The days when crowds would gather to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat, searching for a moment of spiritual stillness in spite of the swarm of camera-clicking tourists around them, feel like a very distant memory.
Until last year, Cambodia’s biggest temple complex was drawing ever-increasing hordes of tourists keen to follow in Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider footsteps. Yet visitors rarely ventured any farther, often flying in and out of Siem Reap as an adjunct to tours of Thailand or Vietnam.
Bokor National Park, also known as Preah Monivong Bokor National Park, sits on the southern coast of Cambodia and is a refuge for many threatened plants and animals, as well as a popular tourist site.
But conservationists warn Bokor’s habitat is under threat from the development of luxury residential estates that are planned to occupy 19,000 hectares inside the park.
The park gained official protected status in 1993, yet was awarded to Cambodian tycoon Sok Kong in 2007 as a 99-year concession for $1 billion. In the intervening years, Kong’s company has developed an access road, luxury hotels and condominiums in Bokor.
