Hanover boys tennis (5-2) won its third straight match, this time a 6-3 overtaking of Alvirne on the road. HHS went 5-1 in singles matches. Junior Evan Yang (8-3), junior Kevin Pillsbury (8-5), sophomore Zhiwen Liu (8-2), senior Alex Stevens (8-3), and junior Charlie Birkmeyer (8-0) emerged victorious. Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen spoke highly of Alvirne’s sportsmanship before praising his team’s performance. “Evan had no trouble taking a win at the top of the ladder, and Kevin played a hard-fought match that was back and forth until he pulled away at the end. His hustle was incredible,” Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen said. “Zhiwen, Alex S., and Charlie rounded out very nice performances down the ladder to clinch the win. At doubles, Alex S. and Kevin played a phenomenal match against an athletic team to eke it out in the end.”

Local roundup: Patience pays for Windsor softball Kate Murphy Modified: 5/1/2021 10:25:59 PM WHITE RIVER JUNCTION Patience proved to be a virtue for the Windsor High softball team on Saturday. The Yellowjackets (3-2) combined seven hits with 15 walks and used them to earn a 19-3 win over Hartford in a five-inning Southern Vermont League softball contest at Hartford High School. As for the hit parade, Hannah Wood, Paige Kleefisch and Kate Murphy led the way by driving in three runs apiece. Wood and Murphy both went 2-for-3, and Kleefisch delivered all of her RBIs with a three-run homer in the third inning.

Lebanon High girls lacrosse took advantage of a John Stark team on break and missing three players to win, 17-3, on Friday. Lebanon (2-2) was led by a strong game by junior Kayla Taber, who scored two goals and assisted three more. Junior Catherine Cole and freshman Maddie Jewell each scored three goals and recorded one assist. Junior Molly Smith finished with two goals and assisted two more. Senior Sydney Gonyea chipped in two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Lena Nowell saved 12 shots, including all nine John Stark shots in the second half.

Local roundup: Hanover softball nets first victory of season Staff Reports Modified: 4/26/2021 11:23:00 PM NORWICH Every Hanover High softball player scored at least one run as the Marauders picked up their first victory of the spring season in a 22-10 defeat of Fall Mountain on Monday afternoon. Hanover (1-4) entered the bottom of the fifth with a two-run lead and scored nine times in the frame to force the mercy rule. Freshman Sage Johnson drove in senior Grace Lewandowski on a sacrifice for the walk-off win. Senior Emilee Jones pitched all five innings for the Marauders. Junior Izzy Kachikis went 4-for-4 with four singles, four runs scored and one stolen base.
