Clarksville, TN Online NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope Hunt for Missing Giant Black Hole

[1] and Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have no evidence that a distant black hole [2] estimated to weigh between 3 billion and 100 billion times the mass of the Sun is anywhere to be found. This missing black hole should be in the enormous galaxy in the center of the galaxy cluster [3] Abell 2261, which is located about 2.7 billion light years [4] from Earth. This composite image of Abell 2261 contains optical data from Hubble and the Subaru Telescope showing galaxies in the cluster and in the background, and Chandra X-ray data showing hot gas (colored pink) pervading the cluster. Black hole goes 'missing' from the centre of distant galaxy Abell 2261

The black hole found at the heart of a galaxy usually has a mass which correlates with the size of a galactic system. So when NASA began studying the galaxy cluster Abell 2261, which is located about 2.7 billion light-years from Earth and is around 20 times the diameter of the Milky Way, the space agency expected to find a monster black hole at its core. However, X-ray observations from NASA s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope have found nothing. The space agency said: Using Chandra data obtained in 1999 and 2004 astronomers had already searched the centre of Abell 2261 s large central galaxy for signs of a supermassive black hole.

A Supermassive Black Hole Appears To Have Curiously Gone Missing

This composite image of Abell 2261 shows galaxies in the cluster (optical), hot gas (pink) pervading the cluster (X-ray), and the large elliptical galaxy in the center of the cluster. You’re going to feel more than a little sheepish, however, if the object you cannot currently locate is one of the biggest objects in the universe, say, a supermassive black hole.

Somehow, a Monstrous Supermassive Black Hole Has Gone Missing

Somehow, a Monstrous Supermassive Black Hole Has Gone Missing 18 DECEMBER 2020 The Universe is full of galaxy clusters, but Abell 2261 is in a class of its own. In the galaxy in the centre of the cluster, where there should be one of the biggest supermassive black holes in the Universe, astronomers have been able to find no trace of such an object.   And a new search has only made the absence more puzzling: if the supermassive black hole got yeeted out into space, it should have left evidence of its passage. But there s no sign of it in the material surrounding the galactic centre, either.
