my good friend doug s numbers are up, but only up to 41. with barack obama and any other president at mid-term in the last 20 years, when the numbers had been that low, when 55 to 60% of the country doesn t like the direction it s going or the president, then you are going to have a blue wave or we can anticipate a blue wave in the house and maybe in the senate. we are all prognosticators, but these numbers don t look good. the kavanaugh boost is what you are looking at and three weeks from now, kavanaugh will be history because donald trump s tweets will take over and dominate politics. you mentioned kavanaugh and do you believe that is in part why house candidates might be leading by 11 points according to new polling? they were leading before the kavanaugh debacle, but the kavanaugh issue, what happened with women, independents,
on the middle east peace plan, it is so unbelievably well done. joining us now is new york times white house correspondent and cnn political analyst maggie haberman. great to have you here. a lot of fascinating things about this. first of all, the whole notion of the timing of this. what do you make of it? my reporting is similar to what we ve heard tonight, which is that she did not want to embarrass the president by doing this right after the midterms. she had made clear for a while that she wanted to go. first she had to get through the united nations general assembly, then the kavanaugh debacle took place and she didn t want to do it in the middle of that. there are? west wing aides that are frustrated that they actually ended up having a couple of good days where they got brett kavanaugh through, they had his swearing in yesterday, and now the week is going to be dominated it seems at least in part by nikki haley. at least the part that s not about kanye west. who meets with
well. joining us now, betsy woodruff for the daily beast. he thinks they re going to do well. what do you think? how do other people feel? look, there is scant evidence that the kavanaugh debacle has done anything positive for republicans going into the midterm elections. one piece of information that s interesting that we received recently is a new poll from cbs which shows that roughly half of democratic voters say they will be angry if kavanaugh gets confirmed. and at the same time, roughly half of republican voters say they also will be angry if kavanaugh doesn t get confirmed. this entire process has only heightened the long-existing rancor and anger that exists in this country. the big question is, what does that mean when it comes to nuts and boellts and numbers going io the midterms. we can t be sure, looking back at 2016. pollsters continuously underestimated the intensity that republican voters had. at the same time, democrats have
