A proposed mine by Florida-based Blue Water LLC in the Salem area of Florence County prompted outcry, a 60-day pause on mine development and new regulations.
Florence County Council put a temporary moratorium in place pausing development of any sand mines in the county until a study on environmental impacts can be performed. It was done in response to a proposed sand mine from looking to be put in just outside of Salem, which is 10 minutes north of Johnsonville.
