Bangor schools set plan to combat racism

School officials say they hope this will help every student feels safe and welcomed.  We are taking this seriously, both reactionarily and proactively, these are issues that are challenging but they are vibrant and they are critical to student learning, Dana Carver-Bialer, Title IX and Affirmative Action coordinator for Bangor schools said. Bangor students will have more diverse guest speakers and class discussions regarding different religions, cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. It s holding more educational events on diversity and inclusion, establishing a better process for reporting bad behavior, and changing its dress code, to name a few. From signage in the bathroom stalls to emails, to me popping into classrooms and being a familiar face, Carver-Bialer says.

The investigation began after five students shared their experiences with racism at the school with the Bangor Daily News in June. The school district launched an internal investigation into the reports, created a Title IX and Affirmative Action Coordinator position, and began diversity training for students and staff.

Updated on December 31, 2020 at 12:53 pm News Center Maine Officials in Bangor, Maine on Wednesday vowed to make changes following an investigation into complaints of racism filed by five Bangor High School students, according to News Center Maine. The months-long investigation was launched after the students shared their experiences with racism at the school with the Bangor Daily News in June. The Bangor Daily News obtained a partial report of the investigation, which has yet to be published. Portland lawyer Krystal Williams, who headed the investigation, discovered evidence of students using racial slurs against Black students, defending slavery and white supremacy in class discussions and teachers mixing up the identities of Black students, according to paper.

Bangor Superintendent Reports COVID Case at Mary Snow School Bangor s Superintendent of Schools says they have a single, confirmed case of COVID-19 at Mary Snow School. Interim Superintendent Kathy Harris-Smedberg says notifications went out over the holiday weekend to anyone who may have been exposed to the virus. All close contacts of those people will need to quarantine at home. In addition, they should monitor for COVID symptoms, like a cough, shortness of breath, or a temperature higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Anyone connected to Mary Snow School, who does not receive an email is not required to quarantine. It s scary news for anyone, but for parents it prompts the question about whether to send your kids to school or keep them at home. Parents are encouraged to contact the school with any concerns, and speak with the principal. Harris-Smedberg said in a media release that Bangor Schools have done exceedingly well keeping students safe, thanks to the efforts of all.
