About a couple dozen Ann Arbor homeowners have applied to add accessory dwelling units known as ADUs to their properties since the city adopted an ADU ordinance in 2016. In some cases, ADUs can be in detached structures such as a carriage house or an apartment above a garage, or a separate rental unit within a home or home addition.

The City of Ann Arbor’s Council Administration Committee approved the resolution, which also requests that Hayner engage in sensitivity training, by a 4-1 vote Tuesday, April 13. Committee member Kathy Griswold dissented. The proposed resolution also includes that Hayner would be removed from the city’s audit committee for the same period of time by Mayor Christopher Taylor.

City Council gave initial approval to allow existing ones to continue while maintaining a ban on new ones in a pair of 7-4 votes Monday night, April 5. The regulations await final approval May 3 and they could grant “legal non-conforming status” to 120 or more short-term rental properties in residential areas.
