question. for instance, they can get it through other data with the government. there s a survey that goes out to some households and asks the questions. so maybe that s what the president is talking about. but it s a little unclear right now, kate. a little unclear? it s a lot unclear, if you will. i think this goes into the category of i don t know if it s dream world versus reality, but in the very least, because the commerce secretary says the census papers are being printed without the question. it s at least maybe don t listen to what the president says, just look at what he actually does and let s see if he tries to fight this, change this, do anything about it, or he just wants to tweet about it. thanks. thanks, kate. coming up, democratic presidential candidate mayor pete buttigieg facing new criticism over a police shooting in his hometown, south bend, indiana. that new criticism now coming from his own police department. coming up, one of the police officers who is cal
including the citizenship question that trump officials had fought so hard to include. moments ago, president trump spoke out, denying the position of his own administration, tweeting this, in part. we are absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question. besides the fact that seems confusing, this is like the second tweet he had about this today. he s saying they re going to fight on. so he s not giving up now, but what can he do? the forms are being printed, according to the commerce department. and the supreme court told the administration that they had to go back to the drawing board if they even wanted to consider this question again. joining me now, hopefully to get some answers here, cnn s supreme court reporter. what can the president do at this point? those tweets certainly seem to leave open the possibility, but he might be having to pull a rabbit out of a hat here, kate, because yesterday secretary ross statement was definiti
plans to withdraw about half of the almost 14,000 troops serving in afghanistan. it s something lindsey graham warns would be a catastrophic mistake. he just returned from afghanistan and cnn s kald kate bouldan was granted access to travel with him. reporter: senator graham is on a mission to show afghanistan is still a fight worth fighting. reporter: you ve been here several times. what is this about? if you re sending people to fight for your country, it s good to come and check to them. reporter: he s been to the region more than 40 times but this marks his first trip back to afghanistan without his friend and closest confidante.
we re trying to piece this together in realtime. we have juliette kayyem, she worked in homeland security and understands the protocol very well. one of the concerns is that somebody sees this, they see the attention, it looked like it wasn t that hard, maybe i ll do it, too. that s exactly right. what s been concerning me this morning is the present investigation of what s going on but someone following up. the typical copycat scenario. that s what everyone is law enforcement is positioning themselves for. so going back to kate s point about what president trump said, he said enough. he did not mention cnn or george soros. the reason why people are desiring something more forceful is not simply to tone it down but to also deter copycat incidences. that s the first thing that makes me a little bit nervous about the positioning we re in right now. i d say one other thing on sort of the theory of the case. motivation clearly can be
the signature of the devices lead them to believe it was crude and sophisticated in terms of who do it, but it doesn t tell them where it came from necessarily. the packages were hand delivered. the package sent to the governor who, yes, is my brother, andrew cuomo is my brother, that package, i don t know even know if it s related. based on what i ve heard, there was no explosive device, no powder. there are markings on the outside that are not similar to what happened in other instances. i d go slow on seeing that as related. in terms of who did it and why they did it, they are nowhere as of this hour. the good news is they don t believe there are more devices. there have been no more reports of suspicious packages they believe are actionable. kate bouldan is here, you were here this morning when people
