Chennai, Dec 28 : Kareema Begum, mother of Oscar winning composer AR Rahman, passed away in the city due to age related ailments. Mourning her demise, Rahman, posted a photo of her on his verified Twitter account on Monday afternoon.
Commenting on his tweet, celebrities from the world of music and cinema expressed condolences. Your heart is broken, I know. But your mother left you with an inner strength , an inner resilience and belief .. that I have seen and admired for long. Stay strong, my friend, commented director Shekhar Kapur.

MUMBAI: Oscar and Grammy-winning composer AR Rahman s mother Kareema Bagum passed away in Chennai on Monday (December 28). The music composer shared a picture of her mother on his social media page and confirmed the reports. It is said that Kareema Begum passed away due to age-related ailments.
According to sources, her cremation will take place later today.
Kareema Begum was married to Rajagopala Kulashekharan, an Indian music composer who worked mainly for Malayalam movies. He composed music for 52 films (23 in Malayalam with 127 songs), and was the music conductor for more than 100 films. His debut song as a music director was Chotta Muthal Chudala Vare , which was a big hit in Kerala. This was composed for the film Pazhassi Raja (1964).

Kareema Begum, the mother of Indiaâs Oscar-winning music composer AR Rehman, has died in Chennai, the NDTV reported Monday.
Rehman posted a picture of his mother without a caption on Twitter Monday afternoon. Soon after his tweet, his friends from the industry and politicians paid tribute to Kareema Begum.
âShe was one of the most gentle, affectionate person I have met,â singer Shreya Ghoshal tweeted. âPraying for her departed soul.â
Film director Shekhar Kapur said Rehmanâs mother had given her son âinner strength, inner resilience and beliefâ.
