Council sparks controversy by halting college spin-off
The decision by the council of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to suspend a planned delinking of the university’s constituent colleges into independent universities has generated fears that the plan will ultimately be shelved for some time.
In November last year, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera gave the go-ahead for a final bill on the delinking of UNIMA after a consultative process.
On 20 January this year, however, the council suspended the process of creating three independent universities, pending a review.
