Over 200 people were arrested on Thursday for their involvement in arson and vandalism during a general strike called by theNepal Communist Party’s splinter faction-led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ that paralysed normal life across the country.
The strike was called by Prachanda-led faction to oppose the appointment of office bearers and members of various constitutional bodies by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli-led caretakergovernment.
KATHMANDU: The normal life was paralysed across Nepal on Thursday during a nation-wide general strike called by the Nepal Communist Party s splinter faction-led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda to oppose the appointment of office bearers and members of various constitutional bodies by Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli-led caretaker government.
Major markets, educational institutions, offices and factories were shut down while transport services were disrupted during the strike.
The government had mobilised at least 5,000 security personnel in Kathmandu Valley to prevent any untoward incident. Only few motorbikes were seen moving around the capital city since morning.
Meanwhile, police have arrested at least 157 cadres of the Prachanda-led faction for enforcing the general strike in different parts of the country. Nepal political turmoil: PM Oli expelled from ruling NCP amid political unrest
Caretaker Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was removed from the ruling Nepal Communist Party by a Central Committee Meeting of the splinter group of the party on Sunday, amid a deepening political crisis post the dissolution of the Parliament.Â
Earlier on Friday, the rival faction leaders of the NCP had threatened to expel Oli s membership from the party as they took to the streets for the second time in less than a month to protest against his decision to dissolve the Parliament on December 20 last year, calling for fresh elections for April and May this year amid the political unrest in the country.

A majority of 315 Central Committee Members of ruling Nepal Communist Party on Tuesday voted for taking disciplinary action against KP Sharma Oli and replaced him with another leader as chairman, Madhav Kumar Nepal.
The Central Committee Meeting convened by Pushpa Kamal Dahal-Madhav Kumar Nepal faction decided to expel Oli from the post of party chairman and replace him with Nepal. Oli has taken steps against historic political change, constitution, democracy and values of party as well as against party unification. He violated the party discipline for which he will be charged with disciplinary offences and he has been removed from the post of party chairman, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, spokesperson for the Dahal-Nepal faction told reporters late on Tuesday afternoon after the meeting was over.
