AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has asked the Vijay Rupani government to be honest and transparent in its dialogue with the public and give a “real picture” of the number of Covid-19 patients and deaths caused by the pandemic in the state. In its order passed on Friday on a suo motu PIL on the Covid-19 situation, the bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Bhargav Karia highlighted certain issues that the government must focus on to control the pandemic situation and directed that “accurate data on RT-PCR testing with correct figures of positive results” be made public. “The state should not feel shy of publishing the correct data of testing results, if such figures are not being correctly reported,” it said.

A day after raising doubts about the actual number of COVID-19 cases and the numbers given by the State government during its hearing on the suo motu petition initiated by it, the Gujarat High Court on Friday asked the State to publish actual data on RT-PCR tests and people found positive for COVID-19. In an order on Friday, the division bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Bhargav Karia also asked the State government to release the actual figures of deaths of patients who had died of COVID-19 and those who died with co-morbid conditions.

The HC reminded the government of the lapse after advocate general Kamal Trivedi said the present surge is like ‘a tsunami of corona’. During the hearing on Thursday, the bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Bhargav Karia reminded the state government of its earlier order, passed in the suo motu petition filed last year, in which it anticipated a surge in Covid-19 cases as was seen in western countries and directed the state government to stay prepared with adequate Covid hospitals, beds, testing facilities and directed it to strictly enforce Covid safety protocols in public behaviour.
