City of Kamloops wants more provincial funding in wake of Canada Day wildfire

“What we’re finding is that a quarter of a million is really a drop in the bucket compared to the number of nature parks and the number of interface areas we have now, growing up through Pineview Valley and growing up through Uplands and certainly Juniper and Dufferin,” Christian told KTW. “We’re interfacing with the forest much more.” The city’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan notes areas of Kamloops that are particularly vulnerable. It states houses on the western edge of Peterson Creek and within Rose Hill face the most serious long-term threats to wildfire. Other areas of concern include Barnhartvale, Juniper Ridge, Heffley and Pineview.

Second paved road in and out of Juniper a priority for City of Kamloops

Trawin said he has been inundated with messages from Juniper residents who reported feeling trapped on the hilltop as the fire burned below, including some who thought they were going to die. He met with council on Tuesday morning and made three recommendations: work immediately with federal and provincial governments to create an additional paved access in and out of Juniper, implement the Voyent Alert app, estimated to cost $100,000 over five years, and report back later in more detail on what happened and what could be done better. Trawin said the city is already looking to pave the Coldwater Drive-High Canada Place road in the next year, but will now be looking at something “bigger” and “long-term” not just emergency access, but a full and open road.
