Forest implements campfire, smoking restrictions

Forest implements campfire, smoking restrictions Written by Nickolas Seibel on April 27, 2021 Campfire and smoking restrictions are being implemented today on the Gila National Forest in order to protect public health and reduce preventable human-caused fires. Adam Mendonca, forest supervisor, said, ※We have seen an increase in abandoned campfires and feel it*s critical to reduce the potential for any additional fire starts during this period of drought and high fire danger.” Fire restrictions are an important tool to help prevent or limit human-caused wildfires, according to a news release. Fire restrictions for the Gila National Forest include allowing campfires only in designated developed campgrounds and picnic areas and they must be in a Forest Service provided metal grill or metal fire pits, the release stated. Fires in rock rings will not be allowed.

Fire at Teddy Roosevelt NP 95% contained, some areas of the North Unit reopening

KNBN NewsCenter1 April 12, 2021 THEODORE ROOSEVELT NATIONAL PARK, N.D. The National Park Service says that the Horse Pasture Fire, which has been burning in the North Unit at Teddy Roosevelt National Park since Saturday, April 3, is at 95% containment as of Monday afternoon. The fire is currently mapped at 5,000 acres. The fire burned lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, State of North Dakota, and some private lands. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The development of winter weather conditions over the past 24 hours have given fire crews an advantage. Firefighters and engines are still assigned to the Horse Pasture Fire and will continue to patrol and monitor for the foreseeable future.

Rain and Snow Provide Additional Assistance to Firefighters

The fire, currently mapped at 5,000 acres, is now 95% contained. “The weather is certainly giving firefighters a little extra assistance in suppressing the fire; It is a welcome addition to the firefighting effort,” said  Lucas Graf, District Ranger for the McKenzie Ranger District of the Little Missouri National Grassland. Prior to this weekend’s wintery rain and snow mix, firefighters had reached 90% containment on the fire.  Graf added, “We couldn’t have gotten here without the help of local volunteers, VFDs, and first responders. The weather conditions and fire activity on the [April] 3 rd posed a real challenge to those folks, and they did an amazing job of holding the fire, particularly the finger on the northwest side, until air support and additional ground resources could arrive. This cold and wet weather is increasing our confidence in the containment lines established over the past week. We are also grateful for all the food and medical supply donation

Badlands in winter | News, Sports, Jobs - Minot Daily News

kfundingsland@minotdailynews.com Kim Fundingsland/MDN As this Jan. 31 photo illustrates, there has been minimal snowfall over much of western North Dakota, including the Theodore Roosevelt National Park-North Unit. WATFORD CITY – What a winter it has been. Very little snow has fallen and, until recently, temperatures have been quite mild given the winter season. For wildlife that must endure whatever weather winter brings, no matter how brutal, the season has been a wonderful gift. Deer, elk, and bison in the badlands terrain of Theodore Roosevelt National Park have not had to exert extra energy scraping and pawing through deep snow to find enough forage to survive until spring. Not this winter. The land is virtually 100 percent open due to a lack of snow.
