then in july 2004, less than a year after the bombing, clark got some unwelcomed news, his prime suspect was dying on him. i see bill in the hospital bed and i said, he looks much more sick than they re telling me so i may have one crack at this. rothstein had terminal cancer. the fbi man crossed his fingers for a death bed confession. i said, bill, don t take this with you. you ve got to tell me, are these cases related? and he lifted his arm out of the bed and he spelled out no and four days later he is deceased. bill rothstein was 60 and whatever involvement, if any, he had with the pizza bombing case he took to his grave without saying a word. with rothstein dead, character s attention turned to marjorie diehl-armstrong who it turned out knew her way around sudden deaths. who is this person?
prostitution circuit that shuttles women from city to city. what we see very often is the women involved in prostitution work in what s called the circuit. so they ll move from albuquerque to phoenix to las vegas to los angeles and maybe not return on that circuit for several years. reporter: it was in denver, another city on the circuit, that detective todd babcock hit paydirt. at one point syllania had been arrested up in the denver area for prostitution, going by a different name at the time. had been booked. they were able to get me a booking photograph of what syllania looked like around the time that she died, we believe. reporter: syllania edwards was released from that denver-area jail in july 2004, the same year almost all the other west mesa women had gone missing. the next time anyone heard anything about syllania, she was here in this makeshift grave site outside albuquerque, sharing it with ten other women she never knew in life but will be forever linked with in d
come up all of the time. all of the time. any of those themes seem to fit? he had several hundred thousand dollars in life insurance on him. obviously, as you said, money is a motive, love is a motive, pride is a motive. for the detectives those factors seemed to point in the direction of russel s wife brenna douglas. not only had she been cheated on and publicly humiliated by russel, but she was the named beneficiary of three life insurance policies he d taken out on himself. the problem was brenna s alibi was solid. there were plenty of people who could confirm that they d been with her at the time russel douglas was killed. the detective knew he needed a break, and in july 2004, exactly seven months to the day after the murder of russel douglas, he got one. i was actually out canvassing and interviewing again, and i got a phone call that said we had a tip on the russel douglas homicide.
