N.J. jail has 30-plus cases of COVID among inmates, officers. Union says they’re understaffed. Updated Jan 28, 2021; New Jersey appears to be coming out of the coronavirus’ second wave, and it cannot come soon enough for officers at Mercer County’s jail, who are overworked and understaffed, the union that represents them says. The virus still lurks inside the Mercer County Correction Center in Hopewell Township, with 14 inmates and 19 corrections officers sicked by COVID-19, and three quarantined with possible exposure to the virus as of Wednesday, the county administration says. The corrections officers’ union has slightly different numbers. As of Tuesday, they said 22 officers had the coronavirus and five are in quarantine.
