ASHEVILLE - A fired city police officer might get his job back now that an assault case against him has been dismissed.
Police Chief David Zack on Feb. 26 said he is reviewing whether absent the criminal charge policy violations on Anthony Sorangelo s record still amount to fireable offenses.
Sorangelo was terminated from the Asheville Police Department Sept. 24 after he punched an intoxicated man lying handcuffed on his back in a patrol car. Body cam video from Feb. 11, 2020, showed Sorangelo climbing into the car to punch the man in the face after the man kicked him in the groin.
The misdemeanor assault case was dismissed Feb. 12, a year after the incident, by Judge Calvin Hill.
