Red Rum’s record-breaking third win at the 1977 Grand National has been named as the most memorable moment in the history of the famous race.
Runner-up in a poll of 2,000 Britons once run by bookmaker William Hill’s was the moment AP McCoy finally won after 14 attempts on Don’t Push It in 2010.
Third was the tear-jerking occasion when cancer survivor Bob Champion rode Aldaniti to victory at Aintree in 1981.

Champion will follow a 191 mile route, which represents the 191 days from his cancer diagnosis to receiving the all clear after pioneering chemotherapy treatment. He will cover the journey in 40 stops at racing yards and locations, finishing at Findon in Sussex from where Aldanit was trained.

He will walk up and down the gallops, or in a circuit. Members of the public can apply to get themselves sponsored to join him Champion and all visits will be Covid secure.
“My story 40 years ago gave hope to people around the world fighting cancer. I have dedicated my life to the cause and hope that people will support me again on this anniversary walk,” said Champion.
