We thought we would start with our own. Hes really one of the nations finest scholars on the First Congress. And the early period in the development of our country. We have been fortunate to have chuck as part of the u. S. Cbs society team for five years prior. Prior to that he was working on the First Congress program. He has put together a very imaginative presentation using primary sources like letters of the times. Where people wrote to one another about the science, the food, the culture and the back and forth that made early days in washington. It is filled with characters you know, but may be filled with stories you are not. While San Franciscos summer of love is long over, it shaped who we are, our value, an our influence on the rest of the country today. Meet the author of season of the witch, david talbot. He also created salon. Com. Hi david. Hi susan. I havent finished the book, but i love it. Why have you decided to cover the years be6782 . I thought this was the revolutionary period in San Franciscos history. It radically transformed itself and then the world. Medical marijuana, immigrant sanctuary, livable wage. Bicycle friendly streets. All of this began here in San Francisco. Gay marriage. Of course the city went through great turbulence to work this all out. People were not bourn with flowers in our hair, we went through
For that matter they couldnt even hand out a leaflet for goldwater for president. Who was the candidate that year and had been nominated in San Francisco. So the students tried to negotiate with the university. The university refused, and then in defiance, some of the students set up a card table right in front of the plaza and handed out leaflets. In short order, a Police Cruiser pulled into the middle of the plaza and arrested somebody named Jack Weinberg who was behind the table. But before they could go anywhere, students begin to sit down around the police car and soon the entire plaza was filled with students sitting round a police car. They held captive for the next 33 hours. And that was the beginning of the Free Speech Movement. [applause] and the fsm went on to stage a number of protests, tried to negotiate with the university. Ultimately, put on what was the biggest city in in the nations history, roughly 800 people were arrested for sitting in overnight at the hall. And in
