Courts ordered Jefferson County Public Schools to take kids to schools throughout the new district to desegregate classrooms. What used to be a benign method of transportation school buses became a source of contention, because they now carried Black students.  White parents protested forced busing a term that decades later carries racist undertones because of those demonstrations.
