7 Great Masterpieces Found in Attics and Basements, From a Rembrandt in New Jersey to a Van Gogh in Norway—Ranked

Workers reveal Judith and Holofernes by Caravaggio. The work was discovered in an attic in Toulouse. Photo by Leon Neal/Getty Images. Aficionados of Antiques Roadshow know that treasure sometimes hides in plain sight (if it isn’t a hoax or dud). And in operatic fashion, masterpieces often surface in prosaic domestic settings: attics, cellars, and garages. It’s precisely the romantic, slovenly nature ideally blocked by cobwebs of these spaces that draws us to discoveries therein. There’s something about the rags-to-riches unlikeliness of it all, such as turning $721,765 in profit on a Chinese bowl purchased for $35 at a Connecticut yard sale.

How the siege of Sarajevo changed journalism

This month marks 29 years since the beginning of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the siege of Sarajevo, during which the city was militarily encircled and subjected to daily sniping, mortaring and shelling, first by the the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and subsequently by the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). The siege lasted 1,425 days, making it the longest siege in modern history, and killed more than 11,000 people. Many of the city’s most important cultural institutions, historical monuments, sporting venues and the wider social and economic infrastructure were destroyed or seriously damaged. Ordinary citizens, already suffering the privations caused by the cutting-off of gas, electricity and water supplies, were not only caught in the crossfire but deliberately targeted by shell and sniper fire.

Fair exposes in detail how corporate media uses Tropes to win intelligent people over to USA militarism « nuclear-news

“Fair” exposes in detail how corporate media uses “Tropes” to win intelligent people over to USA militarism If well-paid US columnists start becoming preoccupied with human rights in your country, it is a pretty good sign that you are about to get bombed. It is also remarkable how quickly those same pundits will lose their acute interest in human rights in a nation after a US intervention. Therefore, the next time you hear freedom, human rights and democracy in another country being endlessly discussed, be on your guard for ulterior motives; these cold-blooded media figures may just be crying crocodile tears in the service of empire.

Fire damages Ryan Township home

BARNESVILLE — Fire caused severe damage to a home in Ryan Township on Saturday, leaving one person homeless. Firefighters were called to 20 Sherwood Drive, just off Hillside Drive, around 10:15 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from one side of the house. Ryan Township Fire Company Capt. Matt Morgan said it was determined the fire started in a first-floor front room of the two-story house and spread to several parts of the home. Although firefighters know where the blaze began, the exact cause remains under investigation, Morgan said. He said state police fire marshal Trooper John F. Burns of the Frackville station was at the scene Saturday afternoon to assist in determining the exact origin of the blaze.
