Critically Endangered Philippine Crocodile Can Scale 50 Degree Limestone Walls
This behavior may suggest researchers take a second look at the population of the species, pegged at around 100 in the wild.
April 6, 2021
The most critically endangered crocodile species in the world, the Philippine crocodile (
Crocodylus mindorensis) can climb steep hills, a behavior that was unknown by researchers studying the species until now.
The reptile, which has seen steady declines that now there are an estimated 100 left in the wild, saw additions to the wild populations in 2013 when 36 captive bred crocodiles were reintroduced to Philippine crocodile habitat on Siargao Island in the Philippines, an island known around the world for its surfing than its reptiles. In 2017, 29 juvenile crocodiles were released.

185 tortoises were wrapped in plastic. 10 died.

This hatchling tortoise survived a smuggling attempt of 185 tortoises.
The Galapagos tortoise is captive bred in many countries around the world to ensure the survival of these species, yet some smugglers tried to smuggle 185 baby tortoises out of the Galapagos Islands. The babies, wrapped in plastic wrap ostensibly to immobilize them, were found during a routine inspection at the Aeropuerto Ecológico Galápagos on Isla Baltra.
The reptiles were destined for the port city of Guayaquil when they were discovered by operators of an x-ray machine at the airport who noticed that something was amiss with the suitcase, the contents of which was declared as souvenirs. Of the 185 tortoises that were found, 10 had died. Nobody has been arrested for this crime.

The observation marks the first instance of a toad or frog female mounting a male.
March 16, 2021
University researchers in Hong Kong have discovered that the Lau’s leaf litter toad (
Leptobrachella laui) mates in an unusual way… with the female on top. Most frogs and toads mate with the male on top and from behind, but the Lau’s leaf litter toad is an exception, according to Sung Yik-hei, professor of science at Hong Kong’s Lingnan University (LU) in Hong Kong.
When the Hong Kong native toads were observed, the female mounted the male, which is usually the opposite of how frogs and toads mate. Because frogs and toads fertilize eggs externally, Sung said in a statement. In all known forms of mating of frogs and toads, the male mounts the female and aligns the reproductive organs horizontally.
